There are plenty of reasons.

For one, Black Panther is the first major black superhero we’ve had.

Why is that important? People connect better with characters they can relate to. For black people in America especially, they have a more relatable hero to see in theaters. It’s probably partially why Black Panther’s domestic box-office was very impressive (700+ million).

Another reason is more simple, he’s a well-portrayed MCU character.

In my personal opinion, Chadwick Boseman is a perfect choice for T’Challa. He nailed that noble yet savage style T’Challa has. And as we’ve seen with other well-cast/portrayed MCU characters (Captain America, Iron Man, Loki) it has made him a fan-favorite.

Finally, the comic-book character has also been fairly popular. Even before the MCU took him on he was one of my favorite Marvel characters, thanks to Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

He was super cool in this TV show, which was one of my absolutely favorite TV shows to watch when I was growing up.

So when you factor all of that in, you can see why Black Panther is popular. I do consider the movie Black Panther overrated critically speaking, but I can easily see why it was so popular.

Black Panther is both the first mainstream superhero movie with a black lead, AND the first mainstream Afrofuturist film. America has a large black population that tends to get ignored by Hollywood. Black Panther is one of the first well written, big budget movies that specifically targets these people.

Caveat, Black Panther isn’t the first black superhero with his own movie. Low budget affairs like Steel, Meteor Man and (arguably) Blade already existed. And there were numerous low budget Afrofuturist films produced in the 60s and 70s, such as Space Is the Place .

But Black Panther is the first time of these films that had a decent budget, a good script, mainstream appeal, and the full force of a major studio behind it.

Here’s just a short backstory: Black Panther takes place right after Captain America: Civil War in Wakanda, a fictional place in Africa, following the death of its king. The Black Panther, also known as Prince T’Challa, is then crowned king to rule over Wakanda. T’Challa’s first order as king is to find the man that killed his father and avenge him.

I am no Marvel comic nerd, but I have seen most of the Marvel movies and have a good knowledge on what is going on in the Marvel Universe. Overall, I would say Black Panther is a decent Marvel movie. I say that because I feel that the Black Panther himself and his home of Wakanda have a weak backstory. We’re not really shown Wakanda and its people, and there’s no buildup of T’Challa and the type of person he is. Though, the movie does have great side characters that are well developed. In general, I would say the movie is great because of how it relates to this generation. The majority of the cast are African and women, which I think is a great step forward in diversifying the movie industry.

The movie also has a great soundtrack, with appearances from Kendrick Lamar and The Weekend, which most teens will recognize. The cast is filled with recognizable actors including Michael B. Jordan, Chadwick Boseman, Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, and even Daniel Kaluuya, who played the lead role in last year’s Get Out. There are small instances where Black Panther references pop culture trends of today, which can be funny to younger kids, but also may be a little corny to those who are older. Whether you’re a Marvel or DC fan, you have to admit, “Black Panther” is incredible. In fact, it’s so incredible that it’s earned $476.6 million so far. If you’re not convinced of its glory, either you haven’t seen it, or you were clearly doing something other than watching the screen with your movie date. To save you from your ignorance, the Clog has compiled a few reasons as to why it’s the best Marvel movie ever.

Woman warriors

Opposed to its other superhero movies, Marvel actually included a strong group of women in this one. Before “Black Panther,” Marvel movies included one or two strong female characters — basically doing the bare minimum. This time, there’s an entire army of woman warriors working to protect Wakanda. Not to mention, Okoye (Danai Gurira) serves as the head general, adding more female force to a genre largely centered on masculinity.

Incredibly good-looking people

It’s not even funny how good-looking everyone in the movie is. Plus, there are several scenes in which T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) are shirtless. Lucky us. Honestly, the entire cast is beautiful, besides maybe Andy Serkis, but he’s supposed to be scary.

Speaking of incredibly good-looking people, Michael B. Jordan plays Erik Killmonger, T’Challa’s bloodthirsty cousin. In all reality, the aggression and power trip of his character is immediately forgivable because he’s so nice to look at. Hopefully, we can expect to see him shirtless in many films to come.

Rhinos

There are rhinos and people ride them like horses! The rhinos are trained and controlled by W’Kabi, played by Daniel Kaluuya, also known for his leading role in “Get Out.” In the big battle scene, W’Kabi calls his rhinos out and madness ensues. I mean really, what could be cooler than a bunch of soldiers riding into battle on rhinos?

Oakland

The first and last live-action shots of the movie take place right next door in Oakland. This shout out to the Bay may make this argument a little biased, but who cares — it’s cool.

The comic relief character is female

Girls can be funny! And smart! What a crazy idea! That’s right, the hybrid funny-nerdy character present in most popular movies is played by a girl this time. T’Challa’s little sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) is both incredibly smart and hilarious, adding an extra layer of humor and equality.

Complex characters

Although the focus is obviously on the protagonist, the script does an excellent job of developing all of the characters. We get personal information about every character organically, so that all of their actions are clearly motivated.

For now, “Black Panther” is the best movie Marvel has produced, but who knows what the future holds? Maybe it will continue to represent marginalized groups and provide narratives for people other than young white men. Who knows?

This acts as a catalyst to start a conversation about culture and encourages the audience to educate themselves and explore what life is like outside their own bubble of familiarity.

The film also takes a step forward in representation, as black children (and adults!) can now look up and see themselves and their stories represented in media where they couldn’t before. Media and reality influence one another in a never-ending cycle, as reality shapes what is portrayed in the media and, in turn, the media influence the audience, who are real individuals. But for too long, a large portion of our population has been under-represented in media, that group of people being those who are not white. So it’s refreshing and about time to have a film which celebrates Africa! Michelle Obama herself phrased it beautifully when she tweeted, ‘I loved this movie and I know it will inspire people of all backgrounds to dig deep and find the courage to be heroes of their own stories.’
