Spider-Man is one of the many premiere characters in Marvel comics. Relatable to a fault and having one of the most unique power capabilities of any superhero, Spider-Man has consistently remained a central aspect of the public subconscious. Whether it’s by comic books or forms of media, there will always be a place for the Web-Crawler. This is especially true with the films, as there have been many different actors to play the character over the years, each with their own suits.

Over the last 20 years and nearly a dozen appearances by Spider-Man on the big screen, the character has seemingly donned just as many suits to fight crime and look good doing it. The trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home hints we may have one or two new suits to add to the pile, which inspired me to ask this very important, life-affecting question: How do the Spidey suits stack up against each other?

Through various on-screen adaptations, Spider-Man has worn some of the most iconic movie outfits ever. But how are the Spider-Man suits ranked?

spider man costume suit in movies ranked

Spider-Man’s costume is arguably the most iconic superhero suit ever. The web-head’s classic red and blue suit now has 20 years of cinematic history, and with that time came many amazing Spider-Man costumes. Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, Andrew Garfield – taking a stopover to the animated Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), and Tom Holland combined have worn 13 Spider-Man costumes on the big screen (including Tom Holland’s upcoming appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home). We are here to rank all the Spider-Man costumes from worst to best in order to determine definitively which Spider-Man movie costume is the best!

Spider-Man: No Way Home
Spider-Man: No Way Home

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are in the final stages of preparation for arguably the biggest solo superhero movie of all time in Spider-Man: No Way Home. While the threequel is clearly set to end the MCU web-slinger’s trilogy with a bang, it will also serve as a semi-retrospective and celebration of Spider-Man’s silver screen history.

1. Black and Gold Suit (Spider-Man: No Way Home)

The Black and Gold suit from Spider-Man: No Way Home is the second black Spider-Man suit that Tom Holland’s Spidey wears in the MCU. The first black suit, the “Night Monkey” Stealth suit featured in Spider-Man: Far From Home, refrains from being too distinctly Spider-Man. With the Black and Gold suit, that is not the case. Visually, the Black and Gold suit is stunning, effectively blending gold into the rest of its dark palette.

Black and Gold Suit Spider-Man - No Way Home 2021

Marketing for Spider-Man: No Way Home reveals mystic energy being used with the suit. As Spider-Man confronts villains from the Multiverse, he requires new tools to help him prepare for his greatest challenge yet.

2. Integrated Suit (Spider-Man: No Way Home)

Spider-Man: No Way Home prominently features the new Integrated suit. The Integrated suit is a more simplistic design than the Iron Spider, implementing elements of both the Iron Spider and the Upgraded suit from Far From Home. The presence of fabrics on the Integrated suit makes it an improvement over the Iron Spider where the absence of fabrics makes the Iron Spider feel very mechanical and unlike Spider-Man. A combination of armor and fabric allows the Integrated suit to appear high-tech while still keeping the suit grounded enough to appear as if it is something Spider-Man would wear.

3. Iron Spider Suit

Show up in these movies:

  • Spider man: Homecoming
  • Tom Holland – Avengers: Infinity War
  • Avengers: Endgame
  • Avengers: Far From Home
  • Spider Man:No Way Home

Peter Parker – Iron Spider Suit (Spider-Man: Homecoming, 2017)

While Peter Parker did not wear the Iron Spider suit in Homecoming, audiences got their first glimpse of it at the end of the movie, when he politely declines the chance to become an Avenger. He was still sporting it in the early embers of Far From Home.

Brody Spider Man Homecoming

Quite simply, it’s breathtaking. The red and gold, coupled with the blue, complement each other well, and the fact that it has metallic limbs is another bonus. The limbs prove key to him defeating Ebony Maw in Infinity War and help protect both himself and the crucial Gauntlet in Endgame.

When we first meet Holland’s Parker in Captain America: Civil War he had yet to really get himself a refined suit, and was instead swinging around New York in a makeshift red and blue suit, with special goggles to hone in his newfound Spidey senses. It’s charming and thrown together, but the eyewear really goes to emphasize the scientific, engineering mind of young Parker. It’s put to good use when he’s forced to dress down in Spider-Man: Homecoming, making him really feel like the underdog who has to prove himself.

Tom Holland – Iron Spider Suit Avengers: Infinity War

Tom Holland’s Iron Spider suit sets the standard on this list for most appearances and most technology utilized, and it doesn’t look too bad to boot. This suit was first introduced at the end of 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming before the Stark-tech suit made its full appearance on Peter Parker’s person in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.

Whatever your feelings about this new take on Peter Parker/Spider-Man, you have to give it up for what is the character’s coolest big screen costume — the Iron Spider suit. Based on the comic book version used predominantly during the “Civil War” storyline, this cinematic version has been seen in more movies than any other suit before and may get its swan song in No Way Home. In terms of functionality, it has a nano-tech design for easy removal, those imposing extendable legs for crowd control or extra grabbing power, varying lenses on the eyes, and a plethora of gadgets. It’s flashy and looks great on screen, but without being too much. The red/blue color scheme is still there with a gold mixture, and with the exception of the bulky wrist shooters, still has the refinement of his simpler suits. Basically, it’s a Spider suit if it was also a suit of armor, and while I imagine some may revere the classic looks, it’s hard to deny the Web-Head has never looked cooler.

The Iron Spider features the usual blue-and-red color scheme of the standard outfit, although the metallic aspect of its design gives it a hint of something totally new. This costume features the biggest Spider-logo of any Holland-worn outfit, both on the front and the back, while being completely blue with gold bordering on the outside.

Also coming with the Iron Spider costume are four mechanical arms that come out of the back via nanotech, and they provide as much functionally as they do visually.

Tom Holland – Iron Spider Suit Avengers: Endgame

Teased at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming and later used by Peter Parker in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the Iron Spider is featured in some of the most iconic moments of the Infinity Saga. The Iron Spider armor is the second suit given to Parker by Stark when recognizing Spider-Man as an Avenger. In-universe, the high-tech armor is incredibly efficient and advanced. But aesthetically, it is not the suit that best captures the core spirit of Spider-Man.

Tom Holland Iron Spider Suit - Avengers Endgame

Iron Spider is too significant of a departure when Peter Parker is a poor student that creates a suit for himself. Fans already disapprove of the Stark suit being too high-tech, but the Iron Spider takes it another step further. Tom Holland does not wear a costume for the Iron Spider suit, instead, it is entirely CGI. The suit may look decent, but is too overdesigned and does not use color as effectively as Tom Holland’s other Spider-Man suits.

Iron Spider Suit – Avengers: Far From Home

Peter’s Newly-Designed Suit (Spider-Man: Far From Home, 2019)

In Far From Home, Peter receives the best suit he has had up until this point. Everything about it, from its appearances to its abilities, and from its origin story to its involvement in the battle against Mysterio, is phenomenal.

Iron Spider Suit Avengers Far From Home 2019

To see Peter making it in front of Happy Hogan was a big emotional moment, namely because of how much he resembled mentor Tony Stark while doing it. Tinkering with the colours was another great idea, with the white spider on the front and back adding a wonderful touch to the exceptional design.

However, in Spider-Man: Far From Home, it is revealed that the suit, when not being worn, is stored in nanite form inside a small, transparent box in Parker’s room.

Iron Spider Suit – Spider Man: No Way Home

The suit featured most prominently in the marketing materials for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is the Iron Spider suit, also known as the Iron Spider Armor. This is what Peter Parker wears during one of his battles against Doc Ock (Alfred Molina). The Iron Spider suit is made up of nanotech, enveloping Peter right when he needs protection, and boy, does he need it against ol’ Doc Ock. At one point during their fight, the scientist takes a blade out from one of his tentacles. Right when it’s about to pierce Spider-Man’s exposed chest, the nanoparticles shift position from his face to his chest, protecting him from the attack while revealing his identity to the multiversal villain.

That’s not the only significant development provided by the nanotech. Otto Octavius absorbs some of the particles into his tentacles, providing them with a red tint featured throughout the trailers. Peter’s able to use this to his advantage, and since he has access to Tony Stark’s tech, he’s able to manipulate the tentacles to his own bidding. It ends the fight and allows him to bring Otto into Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) holding cell.

4. Stark Suit (Captain America: Civil War)

When the Captain America: Civil War trailer dropped, it immediately got everybody talking. There was the prospect of Iron Man and Captain America battling to the death, the possibility of some casualties, and perhaps the thing most discussed on the internet: Spider-Man’s outfit.

Stark Suit - Spider Man in Captain America Civil War

The Stark Suit, gifted to Peter Parker by Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War, is the first traditional Spider-Man suit audiences see in the MCU. It also represents Spider-Man’s signature red and blue color scheme. Whether it’s Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, or Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, their main suits all share in common the traditional Spider-Man red and blue. The Stark Suit appears in all of Spider-Man’s appearances in the MCU before No Way Home, appearing in Civil War, Homecoming, Infinity War, and Far From Home. While the suit is not visible in Avengers: Endgame, Parker continues to wear the Stark suit underneath the Iron Spider.

Tony equips the Stark Suit with a myriad of useful features including web wings, a reconnaissance drone, combat modes, and the built-in A.I., Karen. Peter learns not to have an overreliance on the suit’s features. However, that doesn’t change the fact that the suit is a marvelous piece of technology that greatly enhances the user’s abilities.

5. Upgraded Suit (Spider-Man: Far From Home)

In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter accepts that he will never become the next Iron Man. Peter Parker is not Tony Stark, and the simple realization of crafting your own legacy helps Peter to understand his role and responsibility as Spider-Man. Peter uses the available technology at his disposal to create an upgraded version of the Spider-Man suit. The suit is personalized for Peter’s needs and to his personal liking, with Peter adopting a brand new red and black color scheme.

Upgraded Suit Spider-Man - Far From Home

“I think my favourite would have to be the red and black suit. I really like it because I’ve worn it so much and I think we’ve really changed the image of what Spider-Man is.”

The upgraded suit is the second Spider-Man suit that Peter designs in the MCU. Unlike the homemade suit, however, the upgraded suit represents how Parker would create a Spider-Man suit with advanced technology and resources. Additionally, the upgraded suit appears similar to the first-ever Spider-Man costume in Spider-Man’s first appearance in 1962; Steve Ditko’s Amazing Fantasy #15.

6. Tom Holland – Night Monkey Suit (Spider-Man: Far From Home)

For as much love as I have for Peter Parker’s decked out red and blues in Spider-Man: Homecoming, I think the costume I would rather borrow is his stealth suit (or, as we will forever refer to it as, the “Night Monkey” costume), which he requested from “Nick Fury” (Samuel L. Jackson) to better protect his identity while abroad in Spider-Man: Far From Home. From the slick, espionage-ready design and the amusing flip-up eye lenses, I actually would not be mad if this is the closest we get to seeing Tom Holland in the famous black suit.

7. Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man)

Because Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man was a game changer for comic book movies in 2002, it was only appropriate that Tobey Maguire’s suit would be a game changer for costume design in comic book movies. Other than the traditional red and blue, its anatomically correct front and back spider emblems, platinum webbing and the meanest-looking eyes Spidey has ever had made this suit a true original that has never been duplicated to the same standard as far as I am concerned. You can say what you want about how Maguire acted as Peter Parker, but you cannot deny that he looked good doing it.

8. Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man 2)

The suit that Andrew Garfield wore in the first installment of The Amazing Spider-Man movies most definitely gets an A for effort to try something new, but what I love about his outfit in the 2014 sequel is how it goes back to basics. By combing elements from the source material (especially in the white, buggy eyes) with that of the best cinematic designs to precede it (so, the Tobey Maguire suit), I would call this Spider-Man costume a near perfect marriage of those two worlds.

9. Tobey Maguire Black Suit / Symbiote Suit (Spider-Man 3 2007)

Symbiote Suit (Spider-Man 3, 2007)

When the trailer for Spider-Man 3 debuted and showed audiences that Peter Parker would be getting a snazzy black number, audiences could not contain themselves. It did not disappoint, with the appearance not only looking slick and unique but also changing the way Peter Parker behaved as a result.

Tobey Maguire - Black Suit Spider-Man 3

When wearing the suit, Peter sports a new goth haircut, suffers from overconfidence, and becomes increasingly violent, scarring close friend Harry Osborn for life and accidentally hitting Mary Jane Watson following a brawl at her work. The web-slinger eventually realizes it is taking him over and manages to get rid of it, only to see it take over Eddie Brock instead and transform Peter’s Daily Bugle rival into Venom.

Part of my satisfaction with the Night Monkey outfit is due to my personal opinion that Spider-Man 3 pretty much nailed the black suit already (and is, probably, the one thing they did right, if you ask me). Call me crazy, but while it is a drastic deviation from the comics (solid color with a large, white spider emblem) and, to be frank, is just Tobey Maguire’s original costume gone black, I think the approach works perfectly for cinema and makes all the suit’s best design features really pop out. Think of it as another example of why they say almost any photo looks better in grayscale.

10. Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man)

First Andrew Garfield Suit (The Amazing Spider-Man, 2012)

The suit from the first Amazing Spider-Man movie is a divisive one. For some, Sony decided to tinker too much in their bid to reboot the series and mark it as significantly different from the costumes Tobey Maguire had worn during the Sam Raimi trilogy. For others, however, it was a refreshing change of pace.

Andrew Garfield Costume Suit - The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Many viewers tend to agree with the latter. The tinted eyes are not for everybody, but there is no denying that, at the time, it was the most advanced version of the iconic costume yet.

The web-shooters on Andrew Garfield’s costume from 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man are even less noticeable, but what really sticks out about the ensemble visually are his yellow eye-lenses. For some reason, I was always hung up on that detail of what is, otherwise, a really slick-looking outfit with a web pattern that blends with its uniquely bright shade of red. unlike the black webbing of other suits. Which, to be honest, is another thing I have a slight issue I have. Thankfully, in my opinion, that was fixed in the sequel… which we will get to later.

11. Miles Morales – Spray Paint Suit (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)

Spending most of the movie covering up his face and torso in a cheap store Spider-Man costume, Miles Morales has his big triumphant moment when he makes his way down to Peter Parker’s advanced hideout, grabs a suit, and makes it his own with black and red spray paint. Unlike any other costume in the Spider-Man films, the creation of this one feels so definitively linked to Miles’ personality and uniqueness and is paired with such a powerful moment of self-acceptance. On top of all that, it just looks incredible. Covered in paint, it’s part superhero suit that respects the man who used to wear it and part art project in which Miles stakes his claim as his universe’s only Spider-Man.

12. Revamped Tobey Maguire Suit (Spider-Man 2, 2004)

For the release of Spider-Man 2 in 2004, director Sam Raimi opted to make subtle changes to the costume. While it had been a colorful outfit before, the decision to enhance the red and darken the blue areas of the suit paid off, making it one of the most iconic appearances the favorite neighborhood bug has ever worn. It is an excellent addition to what is perhaps a perfect superhero sequel.

Also, Spidey stays in this costume for two movies straight. Viewers see him donning the look during some of the best action sequences, such as when he faces off against Doctor Octopus and when he and Harry Osborn team up to fight Venom and Sandman during the third film of the trilogy.

But alas, this ranking is just one opinion. Out of all of these, what do you believe are the best Spider-Man live-action movie suits? Be prepared to see many of these suits return in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home
